The defenseman of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Brian Dumoulin, has successfully turned his stable play for the franchise into a new hefty contract. The Stanley Cup champions announced on Monday that the organization had agreed on the terms with Dumoulin and extended his contract for 6 years for $24.6 million.

The contract extension begins immediately and comes after both the sides exchanged arbitration asks, with Brian’s camp asking for $4.35 million and the franchise offering $1.95 million.

Is Brian Dumolin Worth The Contract

The new 6 year contract means that Dumoulin earnings will be $4.1 million per season. This yearly remuneration is equal to the total earnings of 4 defensemen of the Penguins. The Dumoulin contract is not cheap, but that’s the price that NHL owners have to pay to keep a player like Brian in their ranks. After all, he did play a huge role in helping the Pens win the Stanley Cup in 2015-16 and in 2016-17. Brian was a restricted free agent. The new contract will now keep him with the Pens till the 2022-23 season.

The 25 year old star defenseman will now be ready to play his 3rd full season as a part of the defense corps of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Jim Rutherford, the GM of the Penguins, was happy with the deal. He has stated that Brian has been a really good player for the Pens and to know that the blueliner will remain with the team for quite a long time period is not only good for the team, but also for the star player.

Justin Schultz Set For A Big Pay Day

Justin Schultz is another player who will be making big money. He is best friends with Dumoulin and they usually dine together when the team is on the road. The two also tend to be one another in varied get-togethers, such as enjoying the Super Bowl or launching beers during the Stanley Cup parade of the Penguins.

Brian told reporters that he was going to stay the same person that he was before the signing of the new contract. The huge payout will not really change anything about his personality or other aspects of his life. He is still the same person and will remain so. Dumoulin believes that Justin also has a similar attitude and is excited about the fact that ‘Schultzy’ will stay with the team for the next 3 years.

In the 2016-17 campaign, Dumoulin played in 70 regular season games and registered 1 goal and fourteen assists for fifteen points. He also had a rating of an even plus-minus.

Kris Letang suffered injuries and subsequently missed the playoffs. This forced Brian to assume a bigger role and added responsibilities this spring. He subsequently raised his standard of play during the post-season period and led the Penguins with a 21:59 average ice time per game. His plus-9 rating during this period was the best amongst the defensemen of the Penguins. Brian also put up 5 assists and one goal in the 25 playoff matches in the run-up to the defeat of the Nashville Predators by the Pens in 6 games of the Stanley Cup Final.

The former Carolina Hurricanes player has had 11 assists and 3 goals during the team’s run up to the Cup. The 207-pound, 6-foot-4 native of Biddeford, Maine has not missed a single playoff game during the Pens campaign of consecutive title wins. For the past two seasons, he has played all the forty-nine playoff games, while putting up 2 goals and 33 points in 163 regular season matches through his NHL career.

Dumoulin may have some offensive limitations. But he is excellent in other aspects of the game, such as using the stick and breakouts. His approach of defense-first had permitted Letang to use all his offensive talents and freelance. Brian is indeed worth all the money that he is now being paid!
